Return

KNLA soldiers had intercepted a radio communiqué made by the departing Burma Army troops regarding the deployment of 14 antipersonnel blast mines and two tripwire-activated fragmentation mines in the immediate vicinity of the KNLA base and adjacent Kwih Lah village. Many villagers came down from the hills but did not yet dare to return to whatever was left of their homes. Numerous families such as this one thus set up temporary shelters on the eastern bank of the Shwegyin River across from their homes until the KNLA was able to locate and remove all of the landmines. At the time this photo was taken a number of mines still remained as yet unaccounted for.
