is a last year PhD student in law at University of Montréal. Her
thesis is directed by Pr François Crépeau, Hans & Tamar Oppenheimer
Professor of Public International Law, at the Faculty of Law of
McGill University. Her research focuses on the legal status given to
foreigners who seek asylum in Western countries, more particulary in
Canada. Kinga Janik has started her career as a lawyer within the
federal Department of Justice in Ottawa in 2000 and since then has
worked in several positions advising officials on Charter and
immigration issues. She now dedicates her time to her thesis and
