Current Position:
She is currently a Research and Project Associate at the
Mahanirban Calcutta Research Group. Having studied History at
Presidency College, Calcutta, she received her M.Phil and
Doctoral degree from Centre for Historical Studies, J.N.U, New
Delhi. In her M.Phil dissertation, she used the lense of
religion to explore the sexuality of the devadasis of Orissa.
The ambit of her doctoral thesis is however different,
concentrating on the lives, culture, pathos and experiences of
the people of the water and the streets, namely fishermen and
boatmen, hackney carriage drivers and palanquin bearers of
Bengal between late nineteenth and mid twentieth century. Her
enduring research interests have been culture and economy,
rituals and customs, systems and cities, ideas and mentality to
name a few and she takes keen interest in international
politico-social and cultural backdrop of painting, photography,
music and other forms of expressions. She has taught History at
Scottish Church College, Presidency University and Sikkim
University, Gangtok apart from co-authoring history text books
for West Bengal State Book Board and WBBSE. In MCRG, she is
involved with an ICSSR sponsored research project with TISS that
attempts to document and analytically map the lived-in
experiences of the new middle class that arguably came on its
own post 1991, in certain Indian cities.
